Key Features
Automobiles manufacturers are adding futuristic lighting concepts to the dashboards and interior cabinets to enhance the ambience and as a styling detail for brand recognition. Another concept to is to use the dashboard lighting as an indicator to communicate vehicle status and alert the driver, for example changing dashboard color when self-driving is engaged or alerting when driver’s attention is needed. The design concept demand for installing large number of RGB LEDs in many locations within the dashboard and vehicle cabinet. In addition to the complex design challenges, automotive OEMs face many manufacturing issues with the RGB lighting. The color accuracy of LEDs varies and requires sorting to select LEDS with similar color response or calibrating them in production line. The ISELED® (Intelligent Smart Embedded LED) enables achieving all the design goals and the manufacturing challenges can be easily solved with ISELEDs that come pre-calibrated from vendors.
The dsPIC33CK DSC family simplifies the implementation of the ISELED protocol. The dsPIC33CK DSCs offer the following advantages for implementing ISELED applications:
Lower System Cost using 3V dsPIC33CK DSCs with 5V tolerant IOs
- Directly interface ISELED using 5V tolerant Open Drain IOs with no additional glue logic or level shifters needed
- Cost competitive 3V controller with LIN, CAN-FD and Flash ranging from 32KB to 1024KB
Low Overhead ISELED Implementation on dsPIC33CK DSCs
- ISELED protocol is implemented using on-chip Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs)
- A special 5-bit hardware SPI mode and a flexible hardware CRC simplify frame creation for ISELED and offload CPU bandwidth
- Increased ISELED throughput by using DMA to implement animations & light effects
Lower system cost using a single dsPIC33CK DSC for ISELED applications
- A single dsPIC33CK controller for running ISELED protocol and have sufficient CPU bandwidth to optionally implement:
- Robust communication using on-chip CAN-FD/LIN
- ISO 26262 Functional Safety Diagnostics targeting ASIL B safety level
- Robust capacitive touch sensing
