Class B-Certified Touchscreen Controllers


Manufacturers of kitchen and laundry applications are often challenged to apply functional safety features, especially when shipping the equipment to the United States and/or Europe. To reduce the risk of fires in the kitchen and floods in the laundry room, European IEC 60730 and U.S. UL 60730 Class B specifications require safety mechanisms in home appliances such as ovens, cooktops, washing machines and clothes dryers.

Typically, these functional safety measures have been implemented in a dedicated microcontroller (MCU), but an increasing number of home appliances are now equipped with touchscreen technologies for advanced human-machine interaction.

We offer a family of Class B-certified touch controllers with unique safety features that enable system shut-off through an intuitive soft button on a touchscreen, removing the need for an external safety-certified stop or cancel button and associated MCU. They also allow an appliance to detect a touchscreen or appliance failure and shut down automatically through a variety of self-testing capabilities. For example, if the glass breaks on a cooktop, the touchscreen will turn dark and shut off the machin.e

As the number of touch-enabled home appliances continues to increase, the HA1 family of maXTouch® touchscreen controllers shifts the required safety functionality to a simplified single touchscreen interface, helping OEMs reduce costs and improve time to market.

Features of Our Class B-Enabled Touch Controllers


With five family members that range from having 112 nodes (approx 4.5 inches) to 640 nodes (up to 10 inches), our EC/UL 60730 Class B-certified touch controllers:

  • Support IEC 61000-4-6, 10 Vrms, Class A (normal touch operation) conducted noise immunity
  • Operate in a temperature range of −40° to +105°C
  • Support multi-finger thick glove (5 mm) touch
  • Support thick lenses up to 10 mm glass
  • Contain adaptive sensing (self- and mutual-capacitance)
  • Contain I2C (3.4 MHz) slave interfaces (with I2C CRC and sequence number)
  • Contain a secondary SPI (8 MHz) channel (MXT448UD/MXT640UD-HA1 only)
  • Come as comprehensive evaluation kits that include touch sensors
