OpenBMC for Baseboard Management Controllers

OpenBMC is an open-source firmware stack that manages Baseboard Management Controllers (BMCs).

It is a Linux® Foundation project that runs on different systems, including data centers, telecommunication and networking hardware. It provides out-of-band management features that are essential for managing server health, system power and other components. These features include:

  • Power management for turning systems on/off and rebooting
  • Sensor monitoring for temperature, voltage and fan speeds
  • Logging and alerting system-health issues
  • Firmware updates and maintenance
  • Remote Keyboard, Video and Mouse (KVM) access for system troubleshooting and management

One of the key goals of OpenBMC is to provide a customizable, open-source firmware stack across various hardware platforms. It typically integrates with other system management tools such as Redfish, a RESTful API standard for managing servers, to provide comprehensive, automated system management.

Our Microprocessors (MPUs) for OpenBMC

OpenBMC was designed to run on the BMC on the server motherboard, but other peripheral systems such as power shelves, cooling systems, storage components and higher-end switches now adopt OpenBMC as well. Our MPUs run OpenBMC in these subsystems with benefits that include:

  • Mainline Linux ready
  • Small package and lower pin count
  • Integrated cryptography and secure boot
  • System-in-Package (SiP) options
  • Cost-effective

Use Cases

Our MPUs can handle Satellite Management Control (SMC) in applications such as power shelves and chassis management.
