Microchip Brings Industry’s First 24G SAS Storage Expanders and Controllers to Inaugural Plugfest

Microchip, together with the SCSI Trade Association, is driving toward vendor interoperability and demonstrating how 24G SAS alleviates storage bottlenecks in data centers

CHANDLER, Ariz., June 26, 2019 -- Microchip Technology Inc. (Nasdaq: MCHP), via its Microsemi Corporation subsidiary, will participate in the industry’s first plugfest for the SCSI Trade Association’s latest 24G Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) standard that defines how data is moved to and from storage devices in data centers. As the first company to demonstrate 24G SAS expanders and storage controllers, Microchip is playing a key role in validating the specifications in a broad test environment.

In addition to providing products for use in the STA plugfest tests, Microchip will demonstrate how these solutions deliver capabilities beyond the standard to further improve performance and efficiency. The company’s SmartROC 3200 and SmartIOC 2200 storage controllers and SXP 24G SAS expanders all support Dynamic Channel Multiplexing (DCM) technology which fully utilizes 24G SAS uplinks between controllers and expanders by aggregating connections from lower speed expander-attached SAS-3, SAS-2 or SATA drives. This enables data centers to fully exploit 24G SAS and PCIe Gen 4 infrastructure even when using lower-speed drives and removes performance bottlenecks compared to legacy SAS-3 solutions.

Created to support the latest PCIe Gen 4 data center input/output (I/O) specifications, the 24G SAS (SAS-4/SPL-5) standard doubles the storage interconnect bandwidth of the prior SAS standard, eliminates bottlenecks at the CPU host interface and allows more efficient use of legacy storage infrastructure. Product vendors consider the STA plugfest to be a key milestone for gauging 24G SAS market readiness and aligning roadmaps with upcoming PCIe Gen 4 server launches.

The STA plugfest will run from June 25-27, 2019, at Teledyne LeCroy’s Protocol Solutions Group (PSG) facility in Milpitas, Calif.
