Simplify LoRa® End-node Designs with the New Ultra-low Power, Regulatory-certified WLR089U0 LoRa Modules

The new ultra-low-power, highly integrated WLR089U0 LoRa modules greatly simplify the development of remote IoT applications.

LoRa® (Long Range) technology is extending the reach of the Internet of Things (IoT) by combining long-range wireless connectivity with low-power performance. The new highly integrated, regulatory-certified WLR089U0 LoRa modules greatly simplify the development of remote LoRa end-nodes.

What’s new with the WLR089U0 modules?

Figure 1. WLR089U0 Module

The WLR089U0 modules (figure 1) are based on the ultra-low power, highly integrated SAM R34/35 family of LoRa ICs. This standalone module integrates 256KB of flash and 40 KB RAM providing enough memory for LoRaWAN stack as well as for the application user code. The module includes an on-board u.FL antenna connector for ease of use and comes in a compact 17.5 x 13 mm package making it ideal for space-constrained battery powered applications.

The WLR089U0 module is supported by Microchip’s proven LoRaWAN stack and is FCC, IC and RED regulatory certified to accelerate the design of RF applications with reduced risk. The module integrates an RF switch to support worldwide LoRaWAN operation from 863 to 928 MHz allowing developers to use a single part variant across geographies, simplifying the design process and reducing inventory burden. The module supports Class A and Class C end devices as well as proprietary point-to-point connections (figure 3).

Getting Started with Your Design

The WLR089U0 LoRa modules are supported by the WLR089 Xplained Pro Development Kit (EV23M25A). This kit (figure 4) integrates the FCC-, RED- and ISED-certified WLR089U0 module and includes an on-board debugger, current measurement circuitry and extension headers to connect to additional boards. Supported by Atmel Studio Integrated Development Environment (IDE), software examples and a LoRaWAN stack, this development board greatly simplifies the development of LoRa technology end nodes.
