Designing Solar Inverters


Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems require reliable and efficient DC-to-AC inverters to meet the growing demand for solar-generated electricity. These inverters include microinverters, string inverters, central inverters and power optimizers.

Microinverters are small devices that are mounted on individual solar panels. They convert DC power to AC power from each panel to deliver power that measures in the hundreds of watts for a single panel. String inverters are used when multiple solar panels are connected in series, and support either single-phase or three-phase conversion. Central inverters are used with multiple strings of solar panels to convert DC power to AC power and support power outputs between a few hundred kilowatts and upwards of 2,000 kilowatts. The central inverter also analyzes and monitors the overall performance of the components of the system. This improves overall reliability, efficiency and system cost. Power optimizers are DC-to-DC converters that utilize Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) to tune the performance of each solar panel and, in some cases, match the output to meet the performance of the DC-to-AC inverter.
