Redesigning the actuation systems used in aircraft is a focal point for reducing the emissions in aerospace applications. Designers are looking for effective power drive electronics to replace the Electro-Hydraulic Actuators (EHAs) and Electromechanical Actuators (EMAs) used in flight control, landing gear and braking systems. For defense applications, these solutions need to be durable, rugged, compact and modular with the ability to perform in harsh environments for prolonged periods of time.
Our cost-effective, plug-and-play Integrated Actuation Power Solution combines a Hybrid Power Drive (HPD) and a compatible driver board that provides intelligence, scalability, design flexibility, reliability, faster time to market and high power density for aircraft power system applications in More Electric Aircraft (MEA), cargo planes, small planes, defense avionics, electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft, drones and multicopters.
Our HPD modules range from 5 kVA to 20 kVA and have the same footprint. These modules include a three-phase inverter with temperature and output current measurements and options for a brake chopper, solenoid drive and soft starter. They can be configured with Silicon (Si) or Silicon Carbide (SiC) switches.
The isolated gate driver board can manage the intricacies of driving MOSFETs and Insulated-Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs) at a higher switching frequency. The press-fit connector enables the board to be attached easily to the top of the HPD module in accordance with DO-160 and AS9100 standards for the aerospace industry. You can also order an HPD module and a driver PCB assembly separately for design freedom and adaptability.
The Hybrid Power Drive (HPD) module is a cost-effective unit that integrates a three-phase power bridge and a driver stage. The output power rating is 5 kVA. The standard substrate design is composed of a three-phase inverter bridge circuit implemented with SiC MOSFETs and SiC Schottky Barrier Diodes (SBDs).
The HPD includes telemetry circuitry with monitoring features. This HPD includes additional power switches to support high-voltage, low-current solenoid drives.
The HPD design provides a high level of integration with screw-on M3 terminals for power connections and standard connector interfaces for low-voltage signals. We offer this module in a plastic package with an Aluminum Silicon Carbide (AlSiC) baseplate and maximum dimensions of 105 mm × 85 mm × 25 mm. The power substrate is potted with silicone gel and is parylene coated, which provides protection from the environment and performance similar to a hermetic package.
Our aviation Power Core Module (PCM) is an intelligent, cost-effective modular unit that integrates the HPD module and the PCM control and telemetry board. The power stage of the PCM comprises a three-phase inverter bridge circuit embedded with SiC MOSFETs and SiC SBDs. The controller sub-assembly is made up of low-voltage circuitry, primarily digital circuits for Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) generation and communication bus interfaces with local bias power supplies. The output power rating of the PCM is 5 kVA. Refer to the MAIPDMC40X120 data sheet for more information on the HPD.
