The increasing complexity of functions in today’s cars is highlighting the importance of functional safety standards. Safety-related systems in modern cars need robust and dependable electronic components. The safety risks resulting from random hardware failures or systematic hardware/software errors must be reduced as far as reasonably practicable throughout the product’s foreseeable lifetime.

Guidelines and standards have been developed for the process, the technology and the methods used for implementing functional safety in embedded designs. The aim of the functional safety standards is to prevent unacceptable risks that arise from malfunctions in electrical or electronic systems such as safety-critical systems that require safe I/O functionality. Implementing robust safety measures in these systems can dramatically reduce the risk of incorrect behavior in any applications.
