Why Microchip Joined O-RAN Alliance: A De Facto Standard for 5G

The decision to join the O-RAN Alliance was strategic as O-RAN gains more momentum with carriers across the globe. After originally being invited by AT&T to contribute on synchronization initiatives within the Alliance, we recognized the critical importance of synchronization in the 5G landscape, particularly in shaping the architecture of the edge 5G network.

By actively participating in the O-RAN Alliance, we ensure that we not only stay ahead of emerging standards but also actively contribute to shaping them.

Key Players and Driving Forces Within Microchip

Key individuals driving our engagement with the O-RAN Alliance include Karim Traore, who actively attends Working Group 9 and focuses on synchronization. Additionally, efforts extend to Working Group 4, emphasizing our commitment to addressing synchronization challenges comprehensively.

This engagement is currently led by our Frequency and Time Systems (FTS) business unit, with Karim leading the charge. We are strong in multiple areas of technology that are of potential importance to O-RAN Alliance, including Time Sensitive Networks (TSN), Ethernet and RF components.

As O-RAN becomes increasingly integral to telecommunications infrastructure, we look to contribute to and position ourselves as a thought leader and influencer on multiple technologies and standards within the O-RAN Alliance.

Benefits of O-RAN Alliance Membership for Microchip

The benefits of our membership extend across the entire organization, as anyone is free to join and collaborate within any Working Group. With major carriers like AT&T and Verizon as members, our involvement allows us to gain a deep understanding of industry needs. This insight is invaluable for influencing and aligning our solutions with the evolving demands of the telecommunications sector.

By actively participating in the O-RAN Alliance, we ensure that our solutions are considered when defining industry standards. Our End-to-End (ETE) capabilities provide a holistic approach, making us an essential contributor to the Alliance's initiatives.

Currently, we actively participate in Working Groups 9 and 4, contributing our expertise to synchronization challenges. Our involvement extends beyond these groups, exploring opportunities across various working groups within the Alliance. This diversified engagement allows us to harness our unique skill set to address a broad spectrum of topics, from hardware to advanced software solutions.
