E-Motorcycle Motor Control Application Overview

The motor control unit in an e-motorcycle provides the interface between the batteries and the Direct Current (DC) motor to control the speed, acceleration, hill-climbing ability, efficiency and power consumption based on throttle input.

Two types of motors are used in e-motorcycles: Brushless DC (BLDC) motors and brushed DC motors. Sensored or sensorless BLDC motors are the best choice for e-motorcycles because of their efficiency, power-to-weight ratio, durability and better acoustics.

A BLDC motor has a simpler commutation method, which means it can be controlled with many of our products. These devices include our 8-bit PIC® and AVR® microcontrollers (MCUs) and the MTD650x family of dedicated BLDC drivers. For more sophisticated applications, you can use our dsPIC® Digital Signal Controllers (DSCs) and PIC32MK and SAM Arm® Cortex®-M0+ based MCUs. We also provide complementary devices, such as MOSFET gate drivers, DC-DC converters, inductive sensors and CAN transceivers, to help you implement a complete motor control solution. Our comprehensive development ecosystem for BLDC motor control enables you to get started with your application quickly.
